" The time has come when you must act for yourselves. "
-Henry Highland Garnet
1815-1882; from a Speech delivered in the Hall of the United States House of Representatives. *February 12, 1865
The early leaders of the women's rights movements began their reform efforts in antislavery movement.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Lucretia Mott, leaders of the feminist movement, were all abolitionists. African-Americans women such as Harriett Tubman, Sojourner Truth, and Frances Ellen Harper lent their voices to the cause of women's rights.
They faced discrimination and prejudice because of their race and because of their sex. Most of these dedicated, courageous women, however, considered the struggle for African-American equality paramount. Yet they recognized that their rights as women must also be secured. Mary Church Terrell was a leader in both struggles.
" Teach your children they are direct decendant of the greatest and proudest race who ever peopled the earth.
-Marcus Garvey
1887-1940 From a Speech Delivered at Liberty Hall, New York City *November 25, 1922 Black nationalism,
Henry Highland Garnet was a leading antislavery crusader and minister. Along with Frederick Douglass, Garnet was considered to be the most prominent African-American leader during the abolitionist movement.
Some slaves had obtaind their freedom as a result of the Emancipation Proclamation. But the majority were still held in bondage. So the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment brought great excitement to those who had carried on a long determined struggle to end slavery. Garnet's speech before Congress captured excitement. He had been invited to speak as a part of the anniversary celebration of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. He was the first African American to speak before Congress. On December 18, 1865, after the required number of states had approved it, the Thirteenth Amendment became a part of United States Constitution.
